Lovell rejects Browne’s house-shell offer as a disgrace and promises rent-to-own alternative for low-income earners
An insult and a disgrace is how Harold Lovell, Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), views the Gaston Browne Administration’s plans to offer low-income families the shell of a house as part of the Government’s housing programme.
Prime Minister Browne announced that persons making less than $3,000 monthly would be offered an unfinished concrete structure – which they would have to plaster, paint and tile – if they wish to own a home.
Lovell describes these houses as all wattle and no daub, adding that this is unheard of anywhere in the world. Alternatively, he promises that a UPP Administration will embark on a rent-to-own initiative.
Lovell says that while some might complain that apartment complexes will be run-down, proper and frequent maintenance would be key.
He points out that land space is becoming an issue, especially in St. John’s. and therefore it would be prudent to build upwards.
Lovell says the apartments on offer will be very affordable, as low as $900 a month. According to him, this will be the future of low-cost, low-income housing in Antigua and Barbuda.
The UPP Political Leader says his Party is seeking ways to assist the poor and vulnerable and allow them to “own a piece of the rock” with dignity – rejectig what is being proposed by PM Browne.
