Second male charged with Shmaly murder is remanded to prison ahead of February committal date

The second person arrested and charged for the murder of Syrian
businessman Roudi Shmaly six months ago has been remanded to
His Majesty’s Prison.

Shmaly, 25, was gunned down inside his DeSouza Road business,
Pick N Mix Mart, on May 22, 2023.

On Wednesday, November 22, the Police charged 24-year-old
Jahsiba Shoy of Browne’s Avenue for the murder, as well as for
robbery.

Shoy made his first appearance in the St. John’s Magistrates Court
this morning, November 23; but, due to the nature of the charges, a
magistrate has no jurisdiction to grant bail.
The Court has set February 14, 2024, as the date for his committal
proceedings.

Based on information REAL News has received, police officers,
including from the Criminal Investigation Department and the K-9
Unit, executed a search warrant at Shoy’s home at about 5:40 a.m.
on Tuesday, November 21.

Reports say that Shoy was present during the search, along with
another relative, but the Police found nothing of interest.

Shoy was then arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to the St.
John’s Police Station for questioning.

Earlier, officers had arrested and charged a 16-year-old with the
murder of the Syrian businessman; therefore, both young men are
now jointly charged for committing the capital offence.
Reports say that officers had initially detained at least six people on
suspicion of murder during the intense investigations that followed
the killing.

Meanwhile, Shoy and the teen have been jointly charged for robbing
Geraldine Laing of $987, an offence that occurred at Desouza Road
on the same day of the murder.
