DeFreitas says re-registration alone will not stop voter fraud in City South, as ABEC needs reform

Franz deFreitas, the United Progressive Party (UPP) caretaker for St.
John’s City South, is not optimistic that a complete re-registration of
voters in that constituency would eliminate voter fraud.

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is to
undertake a re-registration exercise, as the set of voter identification
cards issued10 years ago will expire in March.
A date for the exercise has not been set, however.

While he is pleased about the re-registration – for the sake of
transparency – deFreitas is not confident that what he sees as
electoral fraud in City South will stop.

In addition to voter re-registration, the UPP caretaker believes that
ABEC, itself, needs to be reformed. Defreitas says some fresh
persons need to be put in place – persons who are not a part of the
current kleptocracy among politicians and those positioned to
preserve the power that politicians now wield.

Accordingly, he says, he will continue to do the work that is
necessary to change the mindset of those living in that constituency
and the country on a whole.

That was Franz deFreitas, United Progressive Party caretaker for
St. John’s City South.
