Abandoned Church Street building burns down, despite efforts by firefighters from three stations

Plumes of thick, dark smoke could be seen, for some distance, rising
into the sky over St. John’s on Monday night, November 27, as a fire
completely destroyed an abandoned building on Church Street.

Reportedly, fire officials received the call at about 6 p.m., and
tenders from the St. John’s Station rushed the short distance to the
scene.

They immediately sprang into action in an attempt to extinguish the
fire, and were joined later by firefighters from the Coolidge and All
Saints Stations.

In spite of their efforts, however, the firemen could not save the
structure.

Reports say the building had no electricity service, but was known
to be frequented by vagrants.

One resident reports that he had been in the shower when he saw
the thick smoke rising into the evening skies, which were
illuminated by the moon.

He says he quickly rushed to the scene to see what was going on and
met the structure engulfed in flames.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
