encourages residents to get and stay active
The Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) is getting set to host its annual
Fitness Challenge in its push for residents to become more active
and make exercise a part of their daily routine.

Dr. Janelle Charles-Williams, the Scheme’s communications and
marketing manager, says this event has been taking place for the
past 15 years or so, excluding the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Charles-Williams says the Scheme, through its many events,
wants to put in place a platform for citizens and residents to
jumpstart their exercise regimen.

She says this year’s Fitness Challenge will be held on November 4
and T-shirts have already been printed. They will be distributed, at
a cost of $20 each, to the participants.

There will be two starting points – the MBS Nevis Street office and
the Christian Valley area – for those taking part in the run, walk, ride
challenge, Dr. Charles-Williams says.

From each category, the first person to cross the finish line will be
recognized.

In the meantime, the MBS manager warns that participants should
not simply wake up that morning and turn up for the challenge.
Rather, she says, they should try to get in some warm-up exercises
before the day of the event.

After the activity, participants will not have to trek back into St.
John’s on foot or bicycle; transportation will be available at the end
point to take them back into town.
