UPP Mobilization Caravan was successful, organizers say, despite ALP attempts to derail it

The United Progressive Party‘s (UPP’s) Mega Mobilization Caravan
and Spot Rally, held Monday evening, October 23, is being hailed a
success, in spite of reported attempts by Antigua Labour Party
supporters to cause disruptions.

The procession, comprising dozens of vehicles, wended its way
through the constituency after moving off from the Bolans playing
field at 5 p.m.

At various stops throughout the villages that make up St. Mary’s
South, UPP members – including former Political Leaders Baldwin
Spencer and Harold Lovell and candidate in Kelvin “Shugy” Simon –
addressed the people, encouraging them to vote where the
“sunshine” appears on the ballot.

As the caravan made its way through the communities, it is reported
that supporters of the ruling party sought to follow the procession,
causing unease among the UPP supporters.

Many felt this was a deliberate plan of the Labour Party – to get
persons into trouble with the Police, which could have led to their
arrest  and their detention on By-Election Day.

In fact, some persons who were viewing the event via Facebook
were asking where the Police were and expressing disappointment
at officers’ slow response to the situation.

The common opinion was that the Police were not responding
because they were being political.
