Situations at Follies and Cades Bay/Old Road prove Administration is not a proactive government, Pringle says

Some residents of All Saints East & St. Luke are panicked at the
prospect of a slow-moving Hurricane Tammy making landfall,
because no drains have been cleaned and already-impassable areas
might create a life-and-death situation.

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle, MP for the constituency, says that
numerous complaints have been made about the drains – as recently
as after Tropical Storm Philippe – but no corrective work has been
done.

Pringle says that even the condition of the roads was pointed out to
the relevant agencies, but their pleas were ignored. And now, with
another system impacting the island within hours, the entire
country finds itself in the same situation.

He chides the Browne Administration for failing to clear the drains
both prior to the tropical storm and afterwards – in spite of the
region still being in an active hurricane season.

He notes that no weather system can take the Government by
surprise, since there is a season for these occurrences – June 1 to
November 30 – allowing the Administration ample time to prepare
for them.

Hence, in its handling of such affairs, Pringle says, the
Administration continues to demonstrate that it is a reactive
government and not a proactive one.

The Opposition leader says the situation is frustrating for him, since
such observations are perceived as “being political” and motivated
by an “opposition” mindset when, really, they are not.

Meanwhile, Pringle is particularly concerned for persons living in
the Follies Development, where, he says, there are huge craters in
the roadway, which were left incomplete after two elections.

Looking further South, the MP spoke of a dire situation that is likely
to develop in the Old Road community if the hurricane brings more
than two inches of rainfall.

He says that persons literally could be trapped and emergency
vehicles would be unable to access the Cades Bay area where repairs
to the bridge remain unfinished.

Meanwhile, the Opposition leader is making an appeal to those
persons who reside in low-lying areas to get to higher ground before
the storm’s impact begins to be felt.

He says remaining in an unsafe location not only endangers the lives
of those individuals, but of those who have to come out and render
assistance.
