Unlawful erection of shacks around the island is a dangerous trend worrying the Barbuda Council, Mussington reports

The Barbuda Council has observed a worrying trend now taking
place, as non-natives reportedly are erecting shacks all around the
sister-island.

If last week’s tropical storm had been more intense, says
Councilman John Mussington, the destruction of these structures
could have been devastating.

Mussington says this type of construction is not allowed. But based
on the Central Government’s rhetoric concerning lands on Barbuda
– with regard to leasehold or freehold – people are just doing what
they like.

As a result, he says the Council will be looking into the situation, as
this type of wanton construction is putting persons at serious risk,
especially in the event of a storm or hurricane.

Meanwhile, speaking about the impact of Tropical Storm Philippe,
Mussington says that Barbudans were spared the brunt of its
impact. However, the islanders are grateful for the rainfall, which is
reported to have been over three inches on the sister-isle.
