Wehner says dumping of dredged materials in Shell Beach bay is of concern, especially in the hurricane season

The dredging and sweeping activity that is taking place in the Shell
Beach area, close to the Parham Harbour channel, reportedly has
reshaped the beach and the sea bed with the creation of a sand bar.

REAL News correspondent George Wehner visited the area on
Monday, September 4, the second time in just over a month.
During his previous visit on August 3, he witnessed the dredged
material – sand and sludge from the bottom of the ocean – being
dumped just inside the bay area at Shell Beach.

Wehner says this situation gives cause for concern. He notes that it
creates an environmental issue in the heart of the hurricane season
– even as the MET Office is closely monitoring Tropical Disturbance
AL95, as it steadily advances towards the Caribbean.

Wehner is asking whether an Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA) has been undertaken, as the law requires, and whether the
dumping of the silt was approved by the Department of the
Environment.

He says the dredged material should have been taken farther out to
sea, or to another location on land, and not just wantonly dumped
inside the bay area.

According to Wehner, the habitat for sea life is being destroyed
through such dumping activities.
