Addition of Sir Robin to campaign shows ALP’s desperation, Shugy says, and Marshall is seeking relevance at this 11th hour

“Desperation” is what former MP Kelvin “Shugy” Simon is calling the
Antigua Labour Party’s deployment of Sir Robin Yearwood to St.
Mary’s South to campaign for its candidate, Samantha Marshall.

Yearwood, the St. Phillip’s North MP, was seen about the
constituency, meeting with residents and seeking their support for
Marshall, whom they voted out of office in the January 18 General
Election.

Following Simon’s resignation from the House of Representatives on
June 7, a by-election is constitutionally due within 120 days.
As a result, he notes that the Labour Party is pulling out all the stops
– resorting to using Yearwood to endorse Marshall, who now sits as
leader of government business in the Senate.

This move reeks of desperation, Simon says, since the senior MP
hardly ever campaigns in his own constituency and has made no
representation in Parliament since the election.

Simon, the United Progressive Party candidate, says the defeated
Marshall has no chance of winning the St. Mary’s South by-election.
She neglected the people for nine years, he states, and now, at this
eleventh hour, is seeking relevance.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has declared that if the
UPP candidate wins he can do nothing for the constituents since
Simon is not in government.

This statement is despicable, Simon responds, and evidence that the
Labour Party likes to play mind games. However, he says, the
people of St. Mary’s South are resolute and will not be intimidated
or blackmailed.
