Free HPV screening and vaccination on offer to girls and women; Ministry of Health encourages wide participation

Women and young girls across the country will have an opportunity to get
vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), as the Ministry of Health
hosts a free HPV Screening and Vaccination Event as part of Vaccination Week
2024.

To support global vaccination efforts, this special event will be held on April
27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Freemans Village Primary School.
According to Health officials, HPV is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection
that can lead to various health complications, including cervical cancer.

However, by offering screening and vaccination services, the Ministry of
Health is aiming to raise awareness about the virus and empower females to
protect themselves against HPV-related health issues.

This year, Vaccination Week is being hosted under the theme “Protect with
Vaccines, Save Lives.” It “underscores the critical role of vaccination in
preventing diseases and promoting public health,” Ministry officials say.

Nurse Wanda Samuel, the deputy superintendent of public health nurses, says:
“The Ministry is pleased to participate in Vaccination Week 2024 and
contribute to the global effort to promote vaccination as a cornerstone of
public health.”

She adds that the screening and vaccination exercise highlights the
importance of HPV prevention and underscores the Ministry’s commitment to
improving health outcomes for all.

Meanwhile, J’noure Smith-Kellman, the Ministry’s communications officer,
says the screening is open to women between 30 and 59 years old, while
females aged nine to 26 years are eligible for vaccination.
No appointment is necessary.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to prioritize
their health and take proactive steps towards prevention.
