Aggravated robbery and attempted arson by Molotov cocktails are under police investigation

An Ovals resident allegedly was attacked, beaten, and robbed by a
known man on April 12 at Ovals.

Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) are now
investigating this aggravated robbery, which allegedly occurred at
about 1 a.m. on that date.

Reports say the victim was walking home when he was attacked by
the man – with whom he is familiar – who beat him about the body
with what is believed to be a firearm.

Further allegations are that, during the incident, the perpetrator
stole $300 and a black mobile phone valued at $150 from the Ovals
man.

As a result of the beating, the victim reportedly suffered a severed
upper lip.

Reportedly, he was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre
by the Emergency Medical Service.

Meanwhile, the Police  have arrested and charged a man in
connection with an attempted arson on April 8 at Factory Road.
Reports say that a man, of the same address, complained to the
Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that his cousin had tried
to burn him, and had damaged two vehicles with Molotov cocktails.

As a result, there were several burnt areas in the man’s yard and
two vehicles that were partially burnt.

Reportedly, the victim was at home when his cousin began chasing
him and throwing lighted Molotov cocktails. The man took cover
behind a nearby Toyota Camry and a GMC SUV, on which the
cocktails exploded.

Reports say the victim then ran onto Factory Road, where he
signaled two police officers who were passing at the time, and they
were able to apprehend the alleged offender.

He was taken into custody at the St. John’s Police Station for
questioning.

Further reports are that the officers were able to recover two bottles
of Molotov cocktails and a bottle with flammable liquid, suspected to
be gasoline.

The items were taken to St. John’s Police Station for investigation
purposes.

Reports are that Garette Thomas of Factory Road was arrested and
charged for throwing the missiles and for assaulting his cousin,
Darron Jonas.
