Nicholas teaches students to embrace maths during Easter- holiday initiative endorsed by MP Simon

Several high school students are getting an opportunity to
improve their mathematics skills at an Easter Break Mathematics
Camp being held at the St. Mary’s Secondary School.

Coach Derrick Nicholas, organiser of the event and a mathematics
teacher, says the initiative is aimed at helping Third and Fourth
Form students, in particular, as they approach Fifth Form.

He says the holiday period is an ideal time for students to sharpen
their skills in the subject area, rather than spending the break
being unproductive.

He says the initiative forms part of a drive to make students more
marketable in an increasingly competitive world; and so the camp
was requested and is welcomed by parents..

While many persons tend to shy away from the subject, Nicholas
notes that mathematics is applicable in everyday life and,
therefore, should be embraced.

He explains that he often relates topics in the subject to routine
life situations – such as cooking and traffic – so that students can
better understand the concepts.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for St. Mary’s South Kelvin
“Shugy” Simon, a former teacher himself, attended the session on
Wednesday, April 3, and lauded the initiative.

In a post on his Facebook page, MP Simon wrote, “I am supporting
this well needed initiative coordinated by Derrick Nicholas and
CIBC First Caribbean… .We want to see improved performance in
Maths, so I am committed to the cause.”
