Still no burials at Tomlinsons cemetery site, nearly two months after fencing began

Almost two months after fencing for the new public cemetery began,
there is still no indication of when burials will be able to take place
there.

However, the Cabinet is claiming that the cemetery’s commissioning
may soon be announced. A precise date cannot be given, the
Executive says, since the fencing of the area must be completed first.
Additionally, roads must be constructed within the grounds; burial
plots are to be demarcated; and buildings are to be erected, based
on the Cabinet Notes from the meeting of Wednesday, November 22.

It was in late September that the Ministry of Works commenced
fencing of the designated acreage at Tomlinsons on Factory Road.

The Government’s intention is to create a grand, state-of-the-art
facility in line with those of other modern-day societies, and include
the construction of a crematorium.

However, the current burial sites, including the St. John’s Public
Cemetery and the Valley Church Community Cemetery, have
reached capacity, forcing the Administration to change its plans and
commence burials at Tomlinson’s before the modern facility can be
built.

On Wednesday, September 27, the Executive had announced that
the first burial was likely to take place there in a few weeks. This,
however, has not happened.

In the meantime, recent heavy rains created flooding in the
designated area, which has prompted observers to hope that
waterlogging problems will not plague the new burial ground.
