Police nab bag-snatcher after two women are robbed downtown, and say new crime-fighting measures are in effect

A Liberta man will be taken before the court this week after the
Police detained and arrested him for robbery and larceny.
The man was in custody up to Tuesday, July 11, assisting officers
with investigations into two separate incidents that reportedly
occurred in St. John’s.

On that day, reports say, two women reported to the Police that they
had been assaulted by a man who stole personal items and money
from them.

During the first incident, one of the victims claimed she had been
walking on upper Church Street when a man allegedly robbed her of
her handbag, in which she carried several valuable items and an
undisclosed sum of money.

This incident reportedly occurred at around 5:20 a.m.
In the second incident, which occurred just over an hour later, at
approximately 6:40 a.m., the other woman said she had been sitting
on a sidewalk bench on Independence Drive when a man grabbed
her handbag and ran towards the car park.

The Police launched an investigation into both incidents, and a 23-
year-old resident of Liberta was apprehended and taken into
custody.

Several of the items stolen from the women were recovered by the
officers.

According to the Police, “This is one of numerous arrests made by
the Police over the past weeks, as [they] continue to enforce their
new crime-fighting measures leading up to the Carnival season and
beyond.”
