EAG reminds residents that closed season for spiny lobster is in effect and breaches will result in hefty fine

The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) is announcing that it is closed season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, and persons who seek to harvest or sell it will face hefty fines.

The closed season runs from May 1 to June 30, and it is now illegal to fish, harvest, sell, purchase or have the lobster in one’s possession.

The EAG is asking residents to respect the closed season and play their part in protecting this species from depletion.

Officials say that failure to comply with this notice will result in persons being fined $50,000, and the catch will be taken away.

Persons who witness this illegal activity are asked to contact 462-1372 or 462-3206, or email: fisheriesantigua@gmail.com.
