Weekends events in Rural West will honour ‘Sunshine’ legacy of Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer

The former prime minister and political leader of the United
Progressive Party (UPP), Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer, will be
honoured this weekend in recognition of the 20th anniversary of his
election as Antigua and Barbuda’s third prime minister.

The events are being spearheaded by the United Progressive Party’s
Rural West constituency branch.

Spencer’s “Sunshine legacy” is being celebrated and will see a
weekend of activities being held, including a Special Prayers and
Praise event at the Greenbay Moravian Church on Sunday March 24.

This event will be incorporated into the morning worship service to
celebrate the day on which Spencer was sworn in as prime minister,
having won the 2004 General election on March 23.

However, on the anniversary day of his election – which is Saturday,
March 23 – a community social will be held at Pensioners Beach to
commemorate the United Progressive Party’s victory.

The Party’s public relations officer, Damani Tabor, is inviting
supporters to join in celebrating a great man, whose many
initiatives and social programmes are still benefitting Antigua and
Barbuda today.

That was Damani Tabor.

Speaking about his milestone, Spencer says he feels honoured to
have made an impact on Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape,
and he still strongly believes in the Party’s philosophy of putting
people first.

Spencer recalls when he was the standard bearer for the Party and
the lone Opposition member in the House of Representatives.

He remembers those years as challenging, but says – with the
support of Party members –
he was able to maintain his focus, which led to the UPP victory in
2004.

Spencer served two terms in government, with his Party losing
office in 2014, followed by his retirement from active politics in
2018.

On March 8, 1989, some 35 years ago, Spencer was elected the
Member of Parliament for St. John’s Rural West and served six
terms.

In recognition of his legacy, the UPP St. John’s Rural West
Constituency Branch will present the former prime minister with
a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding leadership and
commitment to community development and uplifting lives.

Throughout the celebration events, several tributes will be paid
to Spencer by community leaders and Party officials.

Supporters are encouraged to wear vintage T-shirts and other attire
from the Spencer campaigns.

They are also encouraged to share memorabilia or photos as part of
the nostalgia.

Both weekend events are open to the public.
