Man who wounded in-laws who defended his wife is sentenced to 10 years in prison with time on remand considered

Shajah Joyce has received 10 years out of a possible 15-year prison
sentence for wounding his wife’s sister and another relative over a
year ago.

The time Joyce has spent on remand will be deducted from his
sentence, as ordered by High Court Justice Ann-Marie Smith.

The Villa man, who at the time of the offence was 26 years old, was
accused of attacking his wife’s relatives after they came to her
rescue. The assault landed the victims in the hospital, while Joyce
was later arrested and charged for committing the offence.

He was originally charged with attempted murder; however, he was
sentenced for two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous
bodily harm, instead.

The Police alleged that Joyce had attempted to kill several members
of the household at Fort Road on Thursday July 14, 2022.

He was accused of arming himself with a knife; going to the house
where his wife was staying with relatives; and, during the ensuing
altercation, inflicting multiple stab wounds to her sister and
stepfather when they went to the woman’s rescue.

After committing the act in the early-morning hours, he fled from
the scene; but he turned himself in to the Police later that same
night.
