November – all over; weather authorities say above-normal 2023 hurricane season ends on Thursday

The 2023 Hurricane Season ends on Thursday, November 30, with
Antiguans and Barbudans breathing sighs of relief.
 
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA), “the above-normal 2023 Atlantic hurricane season…was
characterized by record-warm Atlantic sea-surface temperatures
and a strong El Nino.”

While Antigua and Barbuda was impacted by two storms in October

Tropical Storm Philippe and Hurricane Tammy – there was no major
impact by either system, apart from heavy rainfall and minor
flooding in some areas.
 
The Atlantic basin, the NOAA says, saw 20 named storms in 2023.
This year ranks fourth for the most-named storms in a year since
1950.
 
Seven of these storms were hurricanes and three intensified to
major hurricanes.


An average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and
three major hurricanes, the NOAA says.
 
According to the NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the
National Weather Service, it will issue its 2024 hurricane seasonal
outlook in May 2024.
 
The hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and ends on
November 30 annually.
