Youth’s hand is 80 percent severed during fight with cutlass- wielding teenager

A teenager is now in trouble with the law after he almost amputated
the hand of another youth during a fight.

This matter was reported to the Police by a 911 operator, who
informed officers that there had been a wounding on Federation
Road in the vicinity of Shark a Come.

Reports say that an 18-year-old Parliament Street resident was
walking towards a shop when he was rushed by a 17-year-old youth
from Federation Road who was riding a bicycle.

They became embroiled in an argument during which the alleged
offender left the scene and returned with a black-handled cutlass
and a friend.

Allegedly the dispute continued, and the 17-year-old fired two chops
at the older teen.

However, in an attempt to deflect the weapon from his head, the 18-
year-old put up his left hand; and, in the process, the alleged
offender almost chopped it off.

He also sustained a second laceration to the hand, which was not as
serious.

The victim reportedly was driven to the Sir Lester Bird Medical
Centre by an unknown person.

According to reports, hospital doctors stated that, given where the
wound was inflicted – just above the victim’s left wrist – the hand
had been 80 percent amputated by the sharp metal weapon.
Doctors had to conduct an X-ray of the hand before surgery was
performed. Fortunately, the victim was in a stable condition by that
time.

Reports say the mother of the 17-year-old alleged offender later
handed him over to the Police.

He was taken into custody at the St. John’s Police Station.
This offence reportedly occurred one evening last week.
