Ground conditions at Ffryes force cancellation of UPP beach event; SMS whistlestop and thanksgiving service will be held

The “Independence Family Fun Day at Ffryes,” which the United
Progressive Party (UPP) had planned to host on Sunday, November
5, has had to be cancelled, and a thanksgiving church service in St.
Mary’s South will be held instead.

Organizers are apologizing to the Party’s membership and
supporters, but say the circumstances leading to the cancellation are
outside their control.

Heavy rains in late October had already forced the UPP to postpone
the event, which was initially slated for October 29. But last
weekend’s weather system only worsened the condition at Ffryes,

where the landside area is being described as waterlogged and
soggy.

Compounding the problem in the areas usually used for parking and
socializing is the overgrowth of tough grasses and shrubs.
Organizers say that, as customary, the National Solid Waste
Management Authority was contacted about clearing the grounds of
this national park ahead of the event. However, on this occasion, the
Party was politely informed that the Authority simply did not have
the resources to get the job done.

Accordingly, given the inhospitable conditions of the space, the
decision was made to forego the Family Fun Day this year.
Meanwhile, the Party is confirming that two other events will be
held in St. Mary’s South this weekend to celebrate the by-election
victory of MP-Elect Kelvin “Shugy” Simon on October 24.

On Saturday, November 4, a Whistlestop & Victory Rally will make
its way through the constituency, departing at 4 p.m. from the
grounds near the Jennings Primary School and ending at the Bolans
Sports Complex. The event will feature dynamic speakers and live
entertainment.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, November 5, supporters are invited to
worship in a thanksgiving service to commemorate Simon’s re-
election. It will be held at the Bolans Wesleyan Holiness Church,
located on the main road, and begin at 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to
be seated by 3:45 p.m.
