Nurses get a turn to share their views and refresh their education on breastfeeding during MoH’s Education Day

Local nurses got an opportunity to voice their opinions on
breastfeeding, when the Ministry of Health and Wellness
collaborated with UNICEF Eastern Caribbean to host an education
day for them at the Tradewinds Hotel on September 28.

The activity gave nurses from the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and
the community clinics a forum in which to share their views and to
receive a refresher on the importance of breastfeeding.

Topics on which the nurses were refreshed included what to look for
to ensure a baby is latching on correctly; the types of food that can
be used to increase breast-milk production; and the length of time
between feeds for infants.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, Nurse April
King-Francis, and Sister Ethlyn Weekes.

The Ministry’s chief nutrition officer, Samantha Moitt, also informed
her audience of the recent “Baby Friendly” certification earned by
the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and what should be done to
maintain this standard.
