Simon rejects ‘intimidation-style politics’ reportedly deployed by ALP operatives and says he has advised the Police

Kelvin “Shugy” Simon, the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate
for St. Mary’s South is alleging that “intimidation-style politics” is
being deployed by operatives of the Antigua Labour Party.

On Thursday night, September 28, Simon told a rally audience that
some constituents’ jobs and livelihoods are being threatened if they
do not vote a particular way, while others are being asked to
surrender their voter-identification cards.

As a result, Simon is pledging to address the issue and involve the
Police, since, reportedly, he has the name of the person who has
been threatening those he considers vulnerable and easily
frightened.

The UPP candidate says this type of politics is not welcome in St.
Mary’s South, and those who are trying to intimidate the
constituents are also seeking to intimidate him – since he is the
people’s advocate.

Simon asserts that it is not the prerogative of politicians, or their
supporters, to scare people into voting for one party rather than
another.

Rather, he declares, the people have a right to vote for whomever
they choose, since their forefathers paid a great sacrifice to enable
them to vote freely today.

According to Simon, the Labour Party knows it cannot win an
election fairly, so it is deploying all sorts of unfair and intimidating
tactics – particularly since the people are rejecting its candidate.
