Locals unimpressed with Rodney’s regional appointment, with some asking for Canadian Mounties to be brought back

Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney has been re-elected, unopposed, as
president of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP), but
many locals apparently are not impressed.

Reportedly this is the second one-year term (2024-2025) that Rodney has
received from the association.

Responding to the announcement in the press, one critical resident says the
region should be on guard for crime to increase ten-fold, while another person
asks what the appointment has to do with Antigua and Barbuda.

Only recently, Rodney was panned for being, reportedly, the worst
commissioner of police in the history of this country, with critics alleging that
he spends more time abroad than seeing to the administration of the Police
Force.

Some claim that he travels even more frequently than the prime minister; and,
as a consequence, the country’s crime levels have increased.

Among distressed members of the public, there is a call for the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police – who temporarily headed the Force under the United
Progressive Party (UPP) Administration – to be brought back to assist the
organization to fight crime.

Meanwhile, Rodney’s re-election took place during the ACCP’s 38 th  Annual
General Meeting and Conference, held in Belize City from May 13-17. It was
held under the theme, “Improving Regional Security through Law
Enforcement Cooperation.”

The ACCP is a 25-member organization that includes commissioners from
across the Caribbean and enjoys partnerships with law-enforcement agencies
in the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and The Netherlands.
