Arrival and departure fee is good revenue-earner, but Council chair says more is required to complete River Dock project

The Barbuda Council’s implementation of an arrival and departure
fee for passengers traveling to and from Antigua and Barbuda has
been reaping rewards, a local-government representative says.

The Council, which manages the internal affairs of the sister-island,
had sought and acquired Cabinet approval to impose a nominal fee
on passengers arriving in and departing Barbuda by sea.

This initiative was put in place, over a year ago, to help the Council
raise revenue, since the Central Government was not keeping up
with its monthly subvention.

Reports say the money derived from this initiative has been used by
the Council to build a terminal at the River Dock and to provide
security for passengers.

Council Chairman Devon Warner says there is quite a lot of traffic
between the mainland and the sister-island at this time, and so the
funds are coming in.

However, he says, additional funding will be required to get the dock
area completed, to include restrooms and office spaces.
