Shots fired outside YMCA bring school’s Sports Day activities to an end; three students taken into custody

One secondary school, the Ottos Comprehensive, had its Sports Day
activities disrupted when gunshots rang out, sending students
scampering on Wednesday morning, February 14.

The Police are now investigating the incident and three students
reportedly have been taken into custody and are assisting with the
probe.

Reports say the school was hosting its Sports Day preliminary
events at the YMCA Sports Complex – with students and teachers
dressed in their house colours – when the event was forced to an
abrupt halt.

As the sporting activities were taking place, gunshots rang out just
outside the complex.

Reportedly, police officers quickly descended on the scene and made
inquiries into the incident.

However, it is unclear whether the students detained by the Police
were directly involved in the shooting incident or whether they
were found with any weapons.

As a result of the scare and the fear generated by the gunshots, the
outdoor event reportedly was shut down and the athletes returned
to their school compound.

It was only last week that pupils from this school were involved in a
cutlass-wielding brawl at the West Bus Station terminal, in which a
student was set upon and chopped after being chased around the
station.
