Only woman to have headed the Police Force, former Commissioner Delano Christopher, passes

Residents continue to pay tribute to former Commissioner of Police
Delano Christopher, the only woman to have led the Force, who
passed away on Sunday, February 11, according to a media release
from STRATCOM.

The communications arm of the Police Force confirmed the death of
Christopher, who headed the organization from 2005 until her
retirement.

Reports say that Christopher passed away at her home in
Gunthropes and was pronounced dead at around 10:30 a.m. on
Sunday.

Christopher is described as a remarkable woman who broke the
ceiling with respect to gender equity in the Force and occupied a
post that had been dominated by men.

She was appointed commissioner under former Prime Minister
Baldwin Spencer during the United Progressive Party
Administration.

And while there were some colleagues who did not see eye to eye
with Commissioner Christopher, she is remembered as a hard
worker over the years she served in the Force.

“The family, Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney, and other
members of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda are
mourning the death …,” a press release said yesterday.

Commissioner Rodney reportedly has met with Christopher’s family
and offered condolences on behalf of the Police’s rank and file.

According to Stratcom, “Further details of her passing and funeral
arrangements will be provided in coming releases.”
