Police and Fire officers undergo theoretical and practical training to recertify them as medics

Police and Fire officers are currently engaged in a recertification
programme that runs for three weeks.

The initiative is a collaboration among the Fire Department, the
Ministry of Health & Wellness, and the Emergency Medical Services;
and the participants are being recertified as medics in the brigade.

An opening ceremony was held at the Sir Wright F. George Police
Academy last week to launch the training, which lasts for a period of
two weeks, and will be followed by 80 hours of theory and practical
training.

Participants are being taught a range of topics, including basic life
support; EMS safety; airway respiratory emergencies; cardiology;
patient assessment; bleeding; and head and spine shock.

In the third week, firefighters will be attached to the EMS for one
week, on ambulance rotation, to get hands-on experience.

Calvin Daley, Joanna Otto, and Courtney Kellman of the EMS are the
training instructors.
