Public invited to townhall meeting on relocation of Five Islands Primary and expansion of The UWI-FI on Thursday night

The Government will be proceeding with plans to relocate the Five
Islands Primary School as the expansion of the University of the
West Indies (UWI) Five Islands campus begins to take shape.

The relocation of the primary school, says the Ministry of
Education, is necessary to accommodate the growth of The UWI-
Five Islands.

Officials claim the new school will be located on a nearby property –
but did not specify where, exactly – and will feature state-of-the-art
facilities.

To this end, a town hall meeting is set for Thursday, October 19, to
update the public on the university’s expansion and the ensuing
relocation of the primary school.

This meeting is being hosted in partnership with the Government,
through the Ministry of Education, and The University of the West
Indies (UWI) Five Islands and will be held at 7 p.m. on the campus.

Officials from both entities will be on hand to answer questions and
provide information, a release says.

The Government says the expansion is a major undertaking with
significant impact, since it will include the construction of new
academic and administrative buildings, student housing, and sports
and recreation facilities.

“The town hall meeting is an important opportunity for members of
the community and general public to get involved and learn more
about these important projects,” the press release adds.

The public is being invited to attend this important meeting and
share feedback.

Reports say that some residents may be displaced, as the
Government will have to compulsorily acquire their properties to
facilitate the expansion.

The compound in which the university is now located was a
purpose-built secondary school undertaken by the United

Progressive Party (UPP) Administration to ease overcrowding in
several secondary institutions.
