Consistent effort to keep drains cleared will help alleviate flooding, UPP caretaker says

The blocked gutters in some parts of Rural South are also in need of
serious attention, says Gladys Potter, the United Progressive Party
caretaker for that constituency.

Commenting on the recently passed Tropical Storm Philippe, Potter
says the constituency retained a lot of water as a result of the
rainfall on Monday night, October 2, into Tuesday morning.

Potter says that certain areas are prone to flooding, and this was
manifested in Ottos New Town, Lower Ottos, Nut Grove and Golden
Grove Extension.

Thankfully, she says, the flood waters ran off very quickly, and by
Tuesday morning, October 3, the only evidence left was the dirt and
mud on the Valley Road, which resulted in some gutters becoming
clogged.

After the usual post-storm clean-up, the UPP caretaker says she is
hoping that the Browne Administration will maintain the effort
going forward.

If a strategy or a programme is not in place to undertake regular
cleaning of the drains, she points out, then residents will always find
themselves dealing with flooding once there is a heavy downpour.

Potter is therefore calling on the Government to be consistent in
keeping the community clean – by conducting regular clearing of the
drains, picking up waste in a timely manner, and clearing overgrown
shrubbery, among other tasks.
