Buying votes will not change SMS by-election result, Simon says, but it will keep the people poor and the country stagnant

The buying of votes will be – and already is being – rejected in St.
Mary’s South, according to the United Progressive Party (UPP)
candidate for the constituency, Kelvin “Shugy” Simon.

Some political players are known for distributing money at election
time; and with the by-election pending, the money and gift-giving
reportedly has commenced.

While advising the people not to be deceived by this gimmick, Simon
says he recognizes that times are hard – and the money they are
being offered is really theirs. Therefore, he understands that if they
are presented with money they will accept it.

However, he is confident that even if money passes hands, the
people will repeat their January 18 decision and vote for him to
represent them in the Lower House.

According to Simon, it is this type of politics that has kept the
country stagnant and the people in poverty. He adds that winning an
election at all cost – with taxpayers’ money – is tantamount to
mismanagement of the country’s financial resources.

The UPP candidate says this kind of financial mismanagement is
why pensioners were not being paid on time and why government
workers continue to fight for their backpay, overtime, and other
gratuities.

It also contributes to the Government not having enough resources
to put the proper infrastructure in communities.
