Makeshift bridge over waterway is a danger to pedestrians, especially children, Wehner chides City East MP Nicholas

The safety of a makeshift bridge in the St. John’s City East
constituency is creating concern for REAL News correspondent
George Wehner since, he says, it is a danger to pedestrians.

On Wednesday, August 30, Wehner visited the area at the junction of
Penny and Ivy Lanes from where he observed three planks stretched
across the watercourse, and which, he says, have virtually fallen,
creating a hazard.

In his opinion, school children in the area are literally being forced
to “walk the plank” in order to navigate the major waterway, which
runs through the Upper Fort Road community and ends at the
McKinnons salt pond.

Reportedly, residents share Wehner’s concern that the collapsing
makeshift structure poses a danger to pedestrians, primarily the
children, and they are calling on MP Melford Nicholas to address the
matter.

Wehner suggests that Minister Nicholas use Government’s resources
to construct a proper pedestrian bypass in that area, which is
commonly used as a shortcut.

Earlier, another makeshift bridge had been constructed in that
location, and residents say it was a bit more sturdy and wider.
However, due to the nearby roadworks, that structure somehow
was destroyed.

Speaking of what now obtains, Wehner says a heavy shower of rain
would wash away the plank bridge. In addition, he says the current
structure is difficult to navigate, especially when wet.

Wehner – who is also the United Progressive Party’s mobilization
officer – chides Nicholas, the constituency representative, about the
situation. He reminds him that, in the January 18 General Election,
he was given the mandate to look about the welfare of St. John’s City
East residents.
