Contest in St. Phillip’s North heats up, as there are now four in the Labour Party ring vying to replace Sir Robin

With two people now having declared their interest in contesting
the St. Phillip’s North seat for the Antigua Labour Party (ALP),
intelligence received by the United Progressive Party (UPP) – that
another by-election will be called soon – appears to be true.

Last weekend, attorney Robin Yearwood Jr. – the son of the sitting
representative, Sir Robin Yearwood – wrote to the ALP branch
chairman, expressing his interest in vying for the seat.

Then on Tuesday, August 29, media reports revealed that Dr. Oswald
Thomas, a campaign strategist and former campaign manager for Sir
Robin, also intends to contest for the candidacy.

Reportedly, there are four contenders in all; but the other two have
not publicly signaled their intention to vie, although talk about Sir
Robin’s imminent exit continues to make the rounds.

Former UPP Political Leader Harold Lovell confirms that the Party
has received good intelligence that other by-elections are imminent.
Lovell says that Prime Minister Gaston Browne is desperate to
secure another seat in Parliament and ensure his one-seat majority
is increased. But the Labour Party will not regain at least two of the
constituencies in which by-elections are expected to be called, he
says.

Therefore, Lovell says, it is now strategically important that the
people of St. Mary’s South put Kelvin “Shugy” Simon back in the
Lower House of Parliament.

He says the upcoming by-election is a mission to rescue Antigua and
Barbuda from the hands of an uncaring, wicked administration that
does not care about the people – only about themselves, friends, and
family.

Lovell predicts that a UPP Administration will be at the country’s
helm soon and will be able to implement programmes and policies
for the betterment and welfare of all who live here.

Once again, in endorsing Simon, Lovell is asking the St. Mary’s South
voters to elect a man with integrity, character and principle; one
who lives among them and is aware of their needs, since their needs
are also his.
