Man cashes cheque stolen from Governor-General’s wife at service station; bank tells police that account has been closed

The Police are investigating a situation in which a man is alleged to
have cashed a cheque that was taken from a stolen cheque book.
Reports say the accounts manager at the Eastern Caribbean
Amalgamated Bank (ECAB), Redcliffe Street branch, called the
Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and made the complaint.

It is alleged that the man went to M&M 24 Hours Service Station on
Old Parham Road and cashed a cheque imprinted with the name of
the Governor-General’s wife – Lady Sandra Williams of Hodges Bay –
in the amount of $1,400.

During their investigations, the Police reportedly went to ECAB,
where the bank officer reported that the cheque had been deposited
by the service station on August 4.

However, the account from which the money should have been
debited has been closed for a few months – since Lady Williams
reported that her cheque book had been stolen.
The police also received certain other information during their
investigation, which continues.
