DeFreitas urges voters to check final Register for Elections and ensure their names appear, since efforts to frustrate are afoot

Franz deFreitas, the United Progressive Party (UPP) Candidate for St. John’s City South, is admonishing all potential voters to check the Register for Elections and make sure their names appear on it – otherwise, they will not be able to vote.

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission published the Register today, Friday, January 13, a mere five days before the January 18 polls.

Already, some residents are complaining that the names of deceased persons are still on the list, and that some people remain listed in certain constituencies where they have not lived for years.

Meanwhile, deFreitas says there was an incident in St. John’s Rural East in which an elector’s name was omitted from the list allegedly because officials were told that he had died.

However, deFreitas reports, a call to his phone from Candidate Sean Bird’s team proved otherwise.

Reportedly, the team had to take the man to the office of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) in an effort to sort out the situation and have his name added back to the list.

In light of this, deFreitas is again appealing to all eligible voters to check the Register and ensure that their name appears on it, because he believes that efforts are afoot to frustrate the process and the voters.
