HUGHES ACCUSES EMPLOYERS OF EXPLOITATION UNDER COVER OF THE PANDEMIC; HOTEL WORKERS ARE WORST AFFECTED, HE SAYS
Union man Chester Hughes is accusing employers of exploiting workers under the cover of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hughes, the Deputy General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, levelled the accusations during this country’s 70th-anniversary celebration of Labour Day.
He says the Union is seeing challenges that, never before, have been experienced in the workplace, and that employers are using the pandemic to exploit workers and trample on their rights.
Hughes says the time has come for workers to fight back, or they will become mentally enslaved in their places of employment, as if they have no rights to survive.
As the pandemic continues to devastate workplaces, he says, employers are piling pressure on workers to go above and beyond what is humanly possible.
The Deputy General Secretary says that hotel workers are the most affected, adding that this sector will never again be like it was.
