Symister inquires into search for new DPP and asks attorney- general why no update has been given

A candidate reportedly is being sought to fill the position of
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the United Progressive
Party is keeping a very close eye on the process, according to Leon
Chaku Symister, its spokesperson on legal affairs.

Shannon Jones-Gittens is the acting DPP, replacing Joanne Walsh,
who acted in the position for three months. Walsh served as the
stand-in after the previous DPP, Anthony Armstrong, was arrested
and charged with fraud in his native Jamaica.

Some time ago, Sir Steadroy Benjamin, attorney general and
minister of justice and legal affairs, had announced that a
replacement is being sought for Jones-Gittens – after she reportedly
said she was not interested in filling the position permanently.

However, since that announcement, Symister says, nothing else has
been heard on the search.

If it is true that the acting DPP is not interested in a permanent
position, why is the Government silent on any active recruitment,
Symister asks.

According to the attorney, the last notice concerning the
employment of a new DPP was made over a year ago. And it is
critical that this position is filled if there is no interest by the acting
post-holder.
