Sir Molwyn reports that contracts have been signed for repairs on hospital theatres and notes rise of cancer in young people

Following the reported flooding of the operating theatres at the Sir
Lester Bird Medical Centre, assurances are being given that repairs
to that floor will be made this week.

The promise is being made by Minister of Health Sir Molwyn
Joseph, who reports that contracts have been signed with the firm
undertaking the repairs.

He says the overhead piping already has been fixed and elective
surgeries are likely to recommence in a short while.

The operating theatres have been plagued by problems in recent
times, with reports of at least two of them being infested with mold.
This has caused the hospital to postpone all surgeries except
emergencies.

Meanwhile, Sir Molwyn says that many of the cancer cases in
Antigua and Barbuda are appearing among young people.
Reportedly, a boy of about seven years of age has developed a life-
threatening cancerous growth in his cheek. In an attempt to save his
life, the authorities will send the child abroad for medical treatment.

In the meantime, the Eastern Caribbean Cancer Centre remains
closed; however, it is reported that some headway has been made in
its acquisition.

This would lead to the reopening of the facility and the return of life-
saving healthcare that currently has to be obtained overseas.
