Hughes declares his confidence in Simon’s re-election and says UPP candidate has PM Browne running scared

Chester Hughes, the deputy general-secretary of the Antigua and
Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), is throwing his support behind
the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for St. Mary’s South,
Kelvin “Shugy” Simon.

Hughes says Simon is the better representative for the constituency
– which the people demonstrated when they elected him in the
January 18 General Elections. And he is confident that Simon will be
returned to the Lower House when next month’s by-election is held.
The Union officer says that Prime Minister Gaston Browne is
intimidated by Simon and is running scared, as he is constantly
attacking the UPP candidate on his Facebook page.

According to Hughes, a victory in St. Mary’s South is more important
to Browne than to the candidate he has running on the Party’s ticket.

He observes that the Labour Party is fighting very hard to win the
seat, as Browne sees this as another means of getting a firmer grip
on the country and doing as he pleases.

That was Chester Hughes, deputy general-secretary of the
Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union.
Following the General Election, Simon was challenged by a Labour
Party supporter, who sought to have the High Court remove him as
the parliamentary representative and install Samantha Marshall.

However, MP Simon resigned on June 7, paving the way for the
upcoming by-election in the constituency.
