Marshall quits St. Mary’s South by-election race; UPP defector becomes new Labour Party candidate

The battle for the vacant St. Mary’s South seat has taken a new twist
as the Antigua Labour Party candidate, Samantha Marshall, has
withdrawn from the race.

In a letter dated July 27, 2023, addressed to the chairman of the St.
Mary’s South Branch, and copied to the general secretary of the
Labour Party, Marshall notes that she is mindful of the clear
message sent to her at the last polls. In addition, she claims that
personal circumstances also have caused her “to step down from the
caretaker position … and not contest the upcoming By-Election.”
It is understood that a defector from the United Progressive Party
(UPP) – Dwayne George, a resident of Bolans – is tipped to replace
Marshall in the pending polls.

George has since tendered his resignation from the UPP. REAL
News understands that his letter to the general-secretary gives
notice of his “formal resignation and defection as a member of the
United Progressive Party effective 27 th July, 2023.”

Up until recently, George was a member of the team campaigning for
UPP candidate Kelvin “Shugy” Simon and had aspired to represent
the Party at the last General Election.
