Former PM Spencer lauds the late President Chavez and credits him with spearheading the Petro-Caribe initiative

Hugo Chavez, the former president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, is being celebrated for his sterling contributions to the people of Latin America and the Caribbean region.

A tribute was held at the Venezuelan Embassy on Wednesday, March 8, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Chavez’ passing, at which Dr. Baldwin Spencer, a featured speaker, described the fallen leader as having been in the vanguard for social justice.

Dr. Spencer referred to the late president as one of region’s finest leaders and credited him with spearheading social programmes such as the PetroCaribe initiative.

Under the PetroCaribe initiative, hundreds of senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda have been able to benefit from a monthly subsidy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. E.P. “Chet” Greene also addressed the gathering at Wednesday’s ceremony.
