BARBUDA COUNCIL PLANS TO REPAIR SISTER ISLAND’S DAMAGED LAGOON & IS SEEKING FUNDING FOR THE PROJECT

Jackie Frank, the recently elected Chairperson of the Barbuda Council, says that plans are in the pipeline to repair the Codrington Lagoon.

The lagoon was partially damaged during Hurricane Irma in September 2017; and now further damage is being caused by the Peace Love and Happiness (PLH) project, Barbudans allege.

Frank says the Council is now looking into how the repair project can be funded.

The lagoon is located in an area that has been declared a Ramsar protected site.

However, the PLH investors are constructing a golf course in the immediate vicinity of the waterway, which is a natural breeding ground for several species of fish and other sea creatures.

This has caused a rift with the Barbuda people, and the Council has sought international assistance to stop what they consider the destruction of the site.
