Following a REAL News report that the operations of a local medical school could be contracting in the upcoming academic year, the American University of Antigua (AUA) has rolled out an incentives package aimed at recruiting new students for Fall 2026 and retaining those already enrolled.

The incentives, announced by University President Dr. Peter Bell, include a freeze in tuition combined with free housing for entering students over the period of their pre-clinical studies, as well as expanded scholarship and grant opportunities in general.

The REAL News article published two weeks ago had reported that new conditions and restrictions in financial aid for American students would negatively affect their ability to afford an offshore education, especially in a country as expensive as Antigua and Barbuda.

The initiatives now on offer by AUA appear to recognize this reality, especially as its president says they are aimed at making its education more affordable and feasible.

Observers, meanwhile, are wondering if this will translate to a surge in applications from other countries, including those on the Indian subcontinent, where getting into medical schools is extremely competitive due to very limited spaces.

They wonder, as well, how the free-housing perk is going to affect the university’s bottom line and, ultimately, its employees, as staff were said to be working “days on days off” recently.

Traditionally, renting to medical students has proved lucrative for many locals. However, one businessman speculates that, with a possibly lower intake of students in the new academic year, and with “free housing” now on offer by AUA, landlords may be forced  to drop their rates if they want to remain in the  rental pool while some may lose out altogether to “better-connected people.”
