Young cancer patient now in Jamaica for treatment and pediatrician thanks the community for its contributions

As young cancer patient Kyle Charles is now in Jamaica, receiving
necessary life-saving treatment, Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis is hailing the
efforts of the community in helping to raise funds for his travel.

Contributing to the young man’s medical care was the Sir Lester
Bird Medical Centre through its Childhood Cancer Awareness fund.

Through the fund, Kyle was able to receive a $1,000 donation, which
was presented to his mother, Nickesha Hogarth. This sum was
added to the other monies raised to assist with Kyle’s treatment.

The 11-year-old was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and is
now at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica, for
specialist treatment.

“It took a village to get Kyle and his mom to Jamaica,” says Dr. Belle-
Jarvis, chair of the Pediatric Department at the Sir Lester Bird
Medical Centre.

She thanked members of the community for supporting the
hospital’s Childhood Cancer initiatives and helping to raise much-
needed funds for families like Kyle’s.

“So, if you’ve ever wondered what exactly your money does… this is
it,” Dr. Belle-Jarvis says.

She notes that the public’s gifts –
no matter what size – fuel the hospital’s commitment to ensure a
future where all children’s journeys end in survivorship.

Dr. Belle-Jarvis, with immense gratitude, says she thanks everyone
for investing in hope – not only for the children and families the
medical facility serves today, but for those whom it has yet to meet.
To date, the hospital has donated $2,350 in aid of Kyle’s care and
treatment.

Meanwhile, MP for St Mary’s South Kelvin “Shugy” Simon helped to
promote a fund-raising initiative for Kyle. The event, a takeaway
lunch, was held on March 2 in Johnsons Point and was well
supported.
