Man who stole produce from fellow farmer is ordered to pay fine and make restitution

The young farmer who was caught red-handed stealing scallions
from a fellow farmer has been ordered to pay a fine and restitution.

William Pitman appeared in the All Saints Magistrates Court on
Monday, January 8, and pleaded guilty to a charge of praedial
larceny.

However, after Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel heard the facts of the
case, she remanded the 48-year-old to prison pending sentencing
the following day, Tuesday, January 9.

When Pitman returned to court, the magistrate imposed on him a
$900 fine and ordered that he pay restitution amounting to $108,
the value of the stolen produce.

Reports say that the victim, a 41-year-old plantation owner who
lives in Bethesda, caught Pitman on his farm stealing 27 bundles of
scallions.

With the assistance of other farmers, the owner apprehended the
intruder and then handed him over to the police after a report was
made to the Dockyard Police Station.

The farmer had secured and left his DeLapps Estate plantation at
about 6:30 p.m. on January 4, and returned the following day to
discover a quantity of his crop missing.

He later saw Pitman removing the crops from their banks. Reports
say the young farmer had scaled a wire fence to access the 15-acre
plantation.
