Second town hall meeting to explore increased rate of ABST to be held tonight at UWI campus

The second in a series of four zonal town hall meetings to discuss
the implementation of a 13 percent increase to the Antigua and
Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) will be held tonight, Thursday, December
14, 2023.

The event, organized by the United Progressive Party (UPP), will be
held at the University of the West Indies Five Islands campus.

This event kicks off at 8 p.m., with a pre-discussion taking place at
7:30 p.m.

This proposed increase – from 15 to 17 percent – reportedly is to
allow the Administration to fund a promised 9 percent salary
increase to public servants.

An experienced panel, along with candidates and caretakers of the
Party, will be on hand to field questions from the public and to give
an analysis of the increase.

Therefore, residents are urged to attend the event and sound their
voices so that their concerns can be addressed.

Last Thursday, December 7, businessman Dr. George Daniel and
chartered accountant Cassandra Simon gave a presentation on the
matter, with questions being raised about the fairness of the tax
structure and the inefficiency of the Government’s tax collection
machinery.
