Minister of Health promises bereaved family that ‘sudden death’ of young Clarevue patient will be fully investigated

Minister of Health Sir Molwyn Joseph has confirmed an ongoing
investigation into the sudden death of a 27-year-old patient at the
Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital.

According to reports, Lateefa George, of Jennings, passed away on
October 31, at about 8:24 a.m. And while some persons claim that
she died at the psychiatric facility, other sources allege that she
passed at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

According to the November 8 Cabinet Notes, Sir Molwyn – who
recently returned from a trip to the Middle East – met with George’s
parents at their home and was very warmly received and
appreciated.

During the visit, the Notes add, he assured the family that a full
investigation will be carried out into the young woman’s death.
Meanwhile, reports say that a coroner’s inquest is underway to
probe what is being described as “a mysterious death” and the
circumstances that might have led to it.

A post mortem examination also will be undertaken to determine the
exact cause of George’s untimely demise.

Reports say that Ministry of Health officials are claiming to have
learned of the young woman’s passing via social media. But it is
alleged that it was a doctor at the hospital who contacted the
Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and reported the sudden
death.

Some reports say that George was found unresponsive at Clarevue
and was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre by
Emergency Medical Service (EMS).

A source confirmed that she was, indeed, taken to the hospital via
ambulance, and that George arrived there with CPR in progress.
These efforts reportedly continued for about 30 minutes in an effort
to resuscitate her – but were not successful.

Prior to this, reports claim, George had been admitted to Clarevue
on September 4, suffering from bipolar depression, and had been
undergoing treatment.

Allegedly, a comprehensive report has been requested from the
senior medical and management teams at the psychiatric hospital.
Media reports allege that the family is seeking legal representation
to investigate the matter further.
