Freak accident at Deep Water Harbour sends shipping- agency employee to the hospital

A serious accident has occurred at the Deep Water Harbour, sending
a middle-aged shipping-agency employee to the Sir Lester Bird
Medical Centre.

According to reports, the victim is a 58-year-old man employed by
Carib Seas.

As a result of the accident at the Cargo Port, on Tuesday afternoon,
July18, the man is reported to have sustained serious injuries to his
hip and other areas of his body after being pinned between a truck
and a container.

Reports say the man was dealing with the container when the driver
of a truck reversed onto him, pressing him against the metal
structure.

It is believed that the driver had not seen the victim, and it is not
known whether the man had been wearing the reflective vest that is
normally required for workers at the Port.

Quoting Port Manager Darwin Telemaque, State media say that an
investigation into the incident will take place, and discussions will
be held with the injured agent as part of the probe.
Telemaque says that reinforced safety modalities will have to be
undertaken, as well.

The injured man was rushed to the hospital by the Emergency
Medical Services (EMS), and the Port manager reportedly has visited
to check on him.

According to State media, again, Telemaque has pledged the Port
Authority’s assistance, if required – although the victim’s employer
is primarily responsible for his welfare.

Years ago, in a fatal accident at the Harbour, a container fell on a
Port worker and crushed him.

This latest incident comes on the heels of another freak accident
that happened in Pigotts, on Friday evening, July 14, when two
Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) workers were injured.
A portion of the excavated area in which they were working
collapsed, and the Water Business Unit employees fell in.

They were buried under dirt, stones, and other debris – one up to
the neck and the other up to the thigh – but were successfully dug
out and transported to the hospital for treatment.
