Amendment to make Barbuda land available to Antiguans is a red herring, Tabor says

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is supporting the position of the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) and the Barbudans concerning their land rights.

The Party’s backing comes ahead of the Government’s plans to further amend the relevant law and enable Antiguans to buy land on Barbuda.

UPP Public Relations Officer Damani Tabor says the Party stands by the original Barbuda Land Act as the sister-island pursues a course of sustainable development.

The Browne Administration’s plan to further amend the law is yet another creative-enrichment scheme, Tabor says, since two government ministers own lands on Barbuda and have already parceled them out for sale.

The UPP PRO condemns this latest scheme of the Labour Party Administration – to take the Barbuda people’s lands and sell them to wealthy foreign investors.

Accordingly, he says, the promise of making Barbuda lands available to Antiguans is just a red herring.

In terms of development, Tabor believes the sister-island has the potential to do as well as – or even better than – other small territories, including Anguilla and Nevis.  However, he says, the Browne Administration’s greed will continue to stagnate Barbuda and its people.
