Dr. Thwaites concerned about increase in prostate cancer since the start of the pandemic and will be researching the cause
Urologist Dr. Dwayne “Baba” Thwaites says he has seen an increase in prostate cancer in a few Eastern Caribbean islands, and believes this is because men were not readily being tested over the past three years, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Thwaites says he is unable to explain, otherwise, why so many men are showing up with elevated PSAs.
He is closely monitoring the data, he says, and will be conducting further studies to determine why there has been a rapid increase in these types of cases over this short period.
Meanwhile, male residents will get the opportunity to have their prostate checked this Saturday, August 13, when the annual prostate screening at the Lions Den returns.
